Shark kills German woman in Sharm

SHARM EL-SHEIKH (Updated) - A shark killed a German tourist in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh Sunday, the fourth attack in days, an official in the Southern Sinai Governorate said.

Rennette Seifferte, 71, was attaced off Hyatt Regency resort in Near Garden area.

Seifferte had lost her right thigh and right elbow while swimming. She had the tradition of spending the winter at the resort, The Gazette has learnt.

Due to the attacks, Southern Sinai Governor Abdel Fadil Shosha temporarily banned water sports in all Sharm el-Sheikh beaches.

"All diving centres and safari boats were notified on a banning snorekling as diving only is allowd," Zyad el-Bassel, the deputy chief of the Diving and Marine Activities Chamber, told this newspaper.

El-Basel added that there were no fears for divers as no incident had been reported involving an attack on any tourist practising diving.

"Divers are well-traines and protected. They know well how to handle sharks."

Last week, three foreigners - two Russians and a Ukrainian - were injured in the Red Sea, prompting Egyptian officials to impose a 48-hour swimming ban in part of the area, one of Egypt's most popular tourist destinations.
