Egypt respects Tunisian people's choice

CAIRO - Egypt said in a statement on Saturday that it respected the choice of the Tunisian people, one day after protests swept President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali from power

"Egypt affirms its respect for the choices of the people in brotherly Tunisia as it trusts in the wisdom of its Tunisian brothers in fixing the situation and avoiding the collapse of Tunisia into chaos," a Foreign Ministry statement read according to Egypt's officail Middle East News Agency (MENA).

In the meantime, two protests took place in Cairo in support of the Tunisian people, Saturday and Friday night, in front of the Tunisian Embassy in Cairo.

The protest was organised by the opposition National Society for Cahnge, April 6 and Kefaya (Enough) movements and was attended by scores of political and social activists and writers.

They issued a statement, saluting the bravery of the Tunisian people, which gives the greatest example of people power to make a change".

Egypt has 'followed the successive developments in Tunisia with great concern,' and asserts its trust in how the Tunisians will control the situation and avoid chaos, the ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

'It is important for Tunisians to come together, in order to maintain the gains they achieved over decades after independence and prevent negative developments that might threaten such achievements,' the ministry added.
