Agreement reached to end police-lawyer tensions in Nasr City

An agreement has been reached by the head of the Lawyers' Syndicate, Sameh Ashour, and Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim, to end tensions between lawyers and police officers at Nasr City police station.

According to the agreement reached on Monday, lawyers will be received by the sheriff's office at the police station and be well treated.

“The minister of interior calls on police stations in all directorates to receive and treat lawyers well,” Ashour said in a statement on Tuesday.

Despite the agreement, Magdy Abdel-Halim, of the Lawyers Without Borders movement, said lawyers would continue to protest until they receive an official apology from the interior ministry.

Lawyers have been staging a sit-in outside the Nasr City police station since Friday after dozens of policemen and lawyers clashed on Thursday. The brawl, which left 16 injured from both sides, was reportedly triggered by an altercation between a lawyer and a policeman inside the police station.

A march planned on Tuesday from the Lawyers’ Syndicate to the interior ministry in downtown Cairo was cancelled.
