Egypt court orders release of April 6 activist El-Masry; trial ongoing

Egypt’s Criminal Court ordered Saturday the release of activist Hamada El-Masry, who has been detained for almost three months on charges of arms posession. His trial, which continues, was postponed to Wednesday in order for testimonies to be heard.

El-Masry, a member of the April 6 Youth Movement, was arrested in February following clashes between lawyers and security forces in front of Boulaq Aboul Ella Police Station.

Standing trial alongside El-Masry are four other activists: Amr Adel, Ahmed Hamdi, Ahmed Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim.

In April, human rights lawyer Ahmed Emam told Ahram Online that around 2,000 people had been arrested during clashes in Cairo since the beginning of the year.
