Protesters in Ottawa, Toronto, MontrealDemand That Morsi Rescind His Dictatorial Decrees And Leave Office
The group Egyptian Canadians for Democracy (ECD) is organizing a Canada-wide “Protest in Solidarity with Egypt’s Fight against Dictatorship” in three major Canadian cities on Friday, December 7th, 2012.
These peaceful demonstrations will be done in solidarity with the nation-wide protests taking place in Egypt at Tahrir Square and the Ittihadiya Presidential Palace in Cairo, as well as cities across Egypt, demanding that President Morsi withdraw his dictatorial decrees issued on November 22nd, 2012 and step down as President of Egypt. These unilateral decrees have given him all the powers of government (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial) needed in order to pass a non-democratic Constitution denounced by all liberal, secular and religious factions of society with the exception of his own Muslim Brotherhood Party.
As peace-loving, democratic Egyptian-Canadians, we see these decrees to be against every basic principle of democracy, and we call on President Morsi to withdraw his dictatorial decrees, step down from office and leave his post to the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court. This is to be done with the aim of convening a pluralistic and diverse Constitutional Assembly to draft a more inclusive, democratic constitution that respects all segments of the Egyptian society regardless of race, colour, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, or political affiliations.
Morsi was elected to the office of the President of Egypt by a razor-thin margin in the June 2012 run-off election against Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak’s last prime minister.
