Journalists Syndicate formally quits Constituent Assembly

The Journalists Syndicate announced on Thursday that it has formally withdrawn its representative from the Constituent Assembly, Mamdouh al-Waly, on the grounds that the assembly is not “balanced.”

The syndicate thereby joins Al-Azhar, the Coptic Church, all liberal and leftist parties, many trade unions and certain public figures, who have all pulled out of the assembly in the past two weeks in protest against the Islamists dominating it.

The assembly is comprised of 100 members elected by the People's Assembly and the Shura Council, which the Islamists control more than 70 percent of.

In its second meeting on Wednesday, the assembly gave a one-week notice to those who have withdrawn to return.
